Scottish Wedding Traditions from your Sunshine Coast Wedding Celebrant No.1- The Quaich

Updated: Jun 5, 2019

Wedding rituals have been with us since time began but I have to say that I’m not big on couples having a ritual included in their ceremony just for the sake of it. However, if couples prefer to include symbolic rituals that reflect their personalities, represent them as a couple or they want to add a cultural element to a ceremony then that’s great. It’s wonderful when couples are more interested in the spirit of the thing and want to preserve the elements and its meanings with less of a concern for the pomp and circumstance.

Being from Scotland I do love a few of our traditional wedding customs. One of my favourites is the Quaich- pronounced ‘kweix’, which is a Scottish traditional two handled love cup.

The Scottish Quaich, originated when King James VI of Scotland presented a Quaich to Anne of Denmark on the occasion of their marriage in 1589 and since then Quaichs have often been used in wedding ceremonies. Drinking from the same cup is a lovely symbol of the love and trust between the couple. It seals the bond of two people, and marks the blending of two families.

Sometimes the couple have this engraved with their names and date of marriage.

Generally the Quaich ceremony would be conducted once the signing of the register has been completed. You can fill the cup with a drink of your choice, usually whisky or whatever you prefer. Then, as your Marriage Celebrant shares a Quaich blessing, the couple each take a sip from the cup symbolising the love and trust implied by the bond, as the newlyweds share the first drink of their marriage together.

There are many traditional Quaich blessings so let me know if you need help selecting one that best represents you both.

P.S. The Quaich with the Scottish Thistle in the photo belongs to me, and couples can use it if they are unable to find one that suits their needs.

Happy drinking!!
